The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has ratified the change of name of the Nigeria Professional Football League to the Nigeria Premier Football League before the start of the 2023/23 season.
This was done at the 79th general assembly of the country’s football governing body on Sunday in Uyo.

“The congress approved the change of name of the Nigeria Professional Football League to the Nigeria Premier Football League,” NFF said in a communique.
The new board of the NPFL had paraded the league as the Nigeria Premier Football League, launching a new logo and new name for the league but the NFF had also insisted that only the congress has the power to change the name.
The 2023/24 NPFL season was scheduled to kick-off on Saturday, September 9 with a curtain raiser between 3SC and Plateau United in Ibadan but the league suffered another postponement due to what the board called exigencies around its sponsorship.
A new date for the kick-off is expected to be announced in due course.
Enyimba won the league last season during the Super 6 playoffs in Lagos to be crowned champions for a record nine times.
